NIH Research Support Mechanisms

The NIH offers a continuum of funding to support researchers throughout their research careers and at all different levels of education and research experience.

The figure below illustrates all of the different types of research or training funding available through the NIH. To determine the types of funding you may be eligible for, locate your current level of education and research experience on the left side of the figure. On the right, you will find the corresponding research awards appropriate for individuals with your level of experience. It is important that new researchers begin with small or more easily attainable projects, as there is a progression in difficulty, length, and complexity of the proposals. Follow the link for full descriptions of funding types.

The NIH Career Wizard can also help you to identify an Individual NIH Career Award that might be right for you by leading you through a series of career and research related questions. Also, check out the K Kiosk for information on K awards (Career Development Awards).

Certain awards are designed for faculty working in institutions with a small research program or none at all. These awards provide funding for the development of the institution's research program and research training for some faculty members. Such awards are marked with a *.
